Το Sukhoi Su-2 που χρησιμοποιήθηκε ως ελαφρύ βομβαρδιστικό και αεροπλάνο ανίχνευσης παρουσιάστηκε για πρώτη φορά στις σοβιετικές μονάδες τον Μάρτιο του 1940, ενώ η μεγάλης κλίμακας χρήση αυτού του αεροσκάφους στην Πολεμική Αεροπορία ξεκίνησε τον Ιανουάριο του 1941. Οι Ρώσοι πιλότοι εκτίμησαν ιδιαίτερα την αξιοπιστία αυτού του αεροσκάφους Sukhoi : μερικά χτυπημένα και κατεστραμμένα Su-2 στάλθηκαν πίσω σε βάσεις επισκευής για περισσότερες από 20 φορές, γεγονός που απέδειξε ότι είναι πολύ στιβαρό σχεδιασμό.
