Η παραγωγή του μαχητικού ελικοπτέρου Mi-24V ξεκίνησε το 1976. Αυτή η έκδοση ήταν εξοπλισμένη με το ριζικά νέο αντιαρματικό πυραυλικό σύστημα Shturm-V με σύστημα καθοδήγησης Raduga-Sh, ικανό να χτυπά στόχους με την υψηλότερη ακρίβεια - πάνω από 92%. Με άλλα λόγια, 9 ή ακόμα και 10 στους 10 εκτοξευμένους πυραύλους έπληξαν τους σχεδιασμένους στόχους τους. Το Mi-24V ξεπέρασε το αμερικανικό ομόλογό του, AH-1S Super Cobra σε αποτελεσματικότητα μάχης. Από το 1976 έως το 1986 περίπου χιλιάδες Mi-24V κατασκευάστηκαν στην ΕΣΣΔ. Αυτά τα ελικόπτερα είδαν δράση κατά τη διάρκεια της σύγκρουσης στο Αφγανιστάν ως μέρος των Σοβιετικών Στρατών. Πολλά από αυτά εξήχθησαν σε διάφορες χώρες συμμαχικές με την ΕΣΣΔ. Σήμερα το Mi-24V εξακολουθεί να είναι η ραχοκοκαλιά της Ρωσικής Αεροπορίας Στρατού.
