Τα βοηθητικά λειτούργησαν μόνο ως στρατεύματα υποστήριξης και χρησιμοποιήθηκαν κυρίως για αποστολές στα σύνορα. Κανονικά συμμετείχαν σε μεγάλης κλίμακας πολεμικές επιχειρήσεις μαζί με τους λεγεωνάριους. Βοηθητικά στρατεύματα στρατολογήθηκαν τόσο από τον πληθυσμό της αυτοκρατορίας που δεν ήταν Ρωμαίοι πολίτες όσο και από τον κατακτημένο λαό της αυτοκρατορίας. Ωστόσο, από τον αυτοκράτορα Αύγουστο υπήρχαν τουλάχιστον 70 βοηθητικές κοόρτες επαγγελματιών βετεράνων που οργανώνονταν με τις ίδιες αρχές με τις λεγεώνες.
