Στις 10 Απριλίου 1912 ο «Τιτανικός» έφυγε από το Σαουθάμπτον για το ταξίδι που φαινόταν να ήταν το τελευταίο της. Στο αεροσκάφος επέβαιναν 2224 άτομα και 1 316 από αυτούς ήταν επιβάτες. Ο ιδιοκτήτης του πλοίου διαφήμιζε τον «Τιτανικό» ως αβύθιστο πλοίο και αυτή η δήλωση δεν μπορούσε να χαρακτηριστεί απολύτως αβάσιμη. Ο «Τιτανικός» είχε σχεδιαστεί για να παραμένει στην επιφάνεια με δύο από τα δεκαέξι στεγανά διαμερίσματα του να είναι πλημμυρισμένα. Ήταν πραγματικά δύσκολο να φανταστεί κανείς τη ζημιά που θα μπορούσε να κάνει το πλοίο να βυθιστεί. Παρόλα αυτά, στις 15 Απριλίου 1912, ο «Τιτανικός» χτύπησε ένα παγόβουνο που άνοιξε πολλές μικρότερες τρύπες στο κύτος και το πλοίο βυθίστηκε μόλις σε 2 ώρες και 40 λεπτά μετά τη σύγκρουση. Μόνο 711 από τους 2224 επιβαίνοντες επέζησαν.
