Το Mil Mi-8MT (modernized transport) - μεσαίο ελικόπτερο πολλαπλών χρήσεων, μια εκσυγχρονισμένη έκδοση του Mi-8T. Το ελικόπτερο είναι εξοπλισμένο με δύο κινητήρες TV3-117MT των 2200 ίππων ο καθένας, μια βοηθητική μονάδα παραγωγής ενέργειας AI-9V, ο ουραίος ρότορας μετακινήθηκε στην αριστερή πλευρά, επίσης πολλά δομικά στοιχεία βελτιώθηκαν. Η ταχύτητα Mi-8MT αυξήθηκε στα 250 km/h, οροφή έως 5000 m, εμβέλεια έως 600 km. Το Mil Mi-8MT έχει βελτιωμένη ικανότητα ελιγμών και αυξημένη ισχύ πυρός λόγω του πρόσθετου αερομεταφερόμενου αρθρωτού οπλισμού. Για την αντιμετώπιση των πυραύλων εδάφους-αέρος, το ελικόπτερο διαθέτει διάφορα συστήματα: διασπορά καυτών αερίων από κινητήρες, εκτόξευση δόλωμα και παραγωγή παλμικών υπέρυθρων σημάτων. Με πάνω από 17.000 κατασκευασμένες μονάδες, το Mi-8 είναι το ελικόπτερο με τη μεγαλύτερη παραγωγή παγκοσμίως.
