Πήρε το όνομά του από έναν στρατηγό του στρατού των Βορείων Πολιτειών κατά τη διάρκεια του αμερικανικού εμφυλίου πολέμου, το M4 Sherman ήταν το μεγαλύτερο τανκ μαζικής παραγωγής που χρησιμοποιήθηκε από τον αμερικανικό στρατό στον Β' Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο. Αξιόπιστα και ευέλικτα, τα Sherman ήταν επίσης αρκετά προηγμένα τεχνολογικά. Η έκδοση diesel του M4A2 προμηθεύτηκε σε όλες τις χώρες δανεισμού-μίσθωσης (Σοβιετική Ένωση, Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο και Γαλλία) από το 1943 και μετά και έγινε το σημαντικότερο τανκ ξένης παραγωγής που χρησιμοποιούσε ο Κόκκινος Στρατός. Ο κύριος οπλισμός ήταν το αμερικανικό πυροβόλο των 75 mm M3 L/37,5. Τα σοβιετικά τάνκερ ονόμασαν αυτό το τανκ "emcha" (ρωσική μεταγραφή του M4). Κατά τη διάρκεια του Β' Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, ο Κόκκινος Στρατός παρέλαβε περισσότερα από 2000 άρματα μάχης. Το M4A2(75) ήταν επίσης σε υπηρεσία με το Σώμα Πεζοναυτών των ΗΠΑ στην εκστρατεία στον Ειρηνικό.
