Το Suchoi Su-24M ανήκει στην 3η γενιά βομβαρδιστικών αεριωθουμένων πρώτης γραμμής και έχει σχεδιαστεί για να εκτοξεύει πυραύλους και βομβαρδισμούς σε όλες τις μετεωρολογικές συνθήκες, μέρα και νύχτα, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των χτυπημάτων σε χαμηλά υψόμετρα για την καταστροφή επίγειων στόχων. Η επιλογή των όπλων κατευθυνόμενων πυραύλων έχει επεκταθεί σημαντικά, το σύστημα πλοήγησης σκόπευσης έχει εκσυγχρονιστεί, η εμβέλεια μάχης του αεροσκάφους έχει αυξηθεί λόγω της εγκατάστασης ενός συστήματος ανεφοδιασμού στον αέρα. Το βομβαρδιστικό Su-24M υιοθετήθηκε από τη Σοβιετική Αεροπορία το 1983 και καθιερώθηκε καλά κατά τη διάρκεια των στρατιωτικών επιχειρήσεων στο Αφγανιστάν. Η παραλλαγή του βομβαρδιστικού, με την ονομασία Su-24MK, εξήχθη στο Ιράκ, τη Λιβύη και τη Συρία.
