Το πρώτο αεροσκάφος που σχεδιάστηκε ποτέ για την καταπολέμηση πυρκαγιών από την έναρξή του, το CL-215 επινοήθηκε για να αντικαταστήσει τα γαλλικά και τα καναδικά αμφίβια αεροπλάνα Canso Catalina. Αφού έλαβε 10 παραγγελίες από τη γαλλική Protection Civile και 20 από την επαρχία του Κεμπέκ, η καναδική εταιρεία κατασκευής αεροπλάνων αποφάσισε να λανσάρει το νέο της αεροσκάφος την 1η Φεβρουαρίου 1966. Πιστοποιημένο στον Καναδά, τη Γαλλία και τις ΗΠΑ, το υδροπλάνο μπορεί να πάρει έως και 1.414 γαλόνια ΗΠΑ σε μόλις 12 δευτερόλεπτα. Αυτό το κιτ κυκλοφόρησε το 2018 (Rebox, νέες χαλκομανίες) από την Heller.
