Το σοβιετικό μαχητικό αεροσκάφος LaGG-3 που χρησιμοποιήθηκε στα πρώτα στάδια του Β' Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου είχε μη ικανοποιητικές επιδόσεις πτήσης λόγω του εν σειρά, υδρόψυκτου κινητήρα του. Το καλοκαίρι του 1942 μια νέα παραλλαγή με έναν ισχυρό αερόψυκτο ακτινικό κινητήρα M-82 τέθηκε σε σειριακή παραγωγή. Αυτή η αλλαγή οδήγησε σε διαφορετικό προφίλ και εξαιρετικά χαρακτηριστικά πτήσης. Ονομάστηκε La-5 και έτσι γεννήθηκε η πρώτη έκδοση των πολύ διάσημων μαχητικών Lavochkin.
