Το Messershmitt BF-109 σχεδιάστηκε στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 1930 και είχε ήδη δει δράση κατά τη διάρκεια του ισπανικού εμφυλίου πολέμου πριν συμμετάσχει στον Β' Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο.
